The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three. It tells the story of Rick Blaine, a cynical American expatriate nightclub owner in Casablanca, Morocco, who has been separated from his true love Ilsa Lund for five years. Ilsa arrives in Casablanca to escape the Nazis with her Czech Resistance leader husband Victor Laszlo. Rick, who is unable to convince Ilsa to stay with him, gives her and Laszlo the money to leave the country and escape to America. In one of the most famous scenes in the film, Ilsa comes to Rick's club, asks him to help her and Laszlo escape from Casablanca, and kisses him. The next day, she leaves with Laszlo for the airport and Rick decides to stick with his policy of neutrality and not get involved.
